Dimming a light is not a new concept. Dimmers were developed decades ago to dim incandescent bulbs.
With the advancement in technology, incandescent bulbs have been succeeded first by CFLs and now by LED bulbs.
One irritation with LED bulbs and dimmers that we have all experienced is flicker or inconsistent dimming. The main reason for this is how electronic dimming works.
This is where AI can come help overcome many of these issues. An intelligent dimmer would be able to automatically adapt to a bulb’s ‘S’ curve and provide flicker free and smooth dimming.
BriteLight’s intelligent dimming has a built-in ‘Load Test’. This functionality can dynamically adjust the control of the AC cycle from 1μs to 8.33ms. The AI engine inside uses this precision to control the timing of an AC cycle. Built-in power metering feeds information to the AI engine so it can derive the ‘S’ curve for the bulb. In short the AI figures out the necessary dimming steps required for lower (fine), mid (normal) and higher (coarse) to give the best possible dimming outcome. Users who have experienced this know the ‘Wow’ effect in how smooth and subtle the dynamic intelligent dimming of a BriteLight is.
Included in the AI module is the ability to detect if the bulb is non-dimmable, detect abnormalities at extremes and derive appropriate cutoffs.
It is also used for safety, where the switch automatically shuts the load off if the safety ratings are exceeded (e.g. excessive load wattage).
