The recent trend of Aging in Place is related to senior citizens wanting to live independently in their own homes. At the same time loved ones want to ensure they are safe and healthy.

Technologies like cameras and wearables exist that can help monitor them. But most are uncomfortable when it comes to the use of such technologies. They hate cameras and anything wearable like a pendant since they feel they are being watched and lose their sense of privacy. The wearables also have another issue that they can forget or decide not to wear them.

The right approach should be non-invasive and not be obvious that they are being ‘observed’ for their safety. This is  where AI driven approaches make more sense.

Aging in Place with AI

So what do we mean by AI driven approach?

By using basic motion sensing and collecting data at various points of the home, AI models can correlate the way the motion activities get associated. In simple terms the duration of presence or absence and how each point is being triggered. An AI model can predict the routine behaviors and patterns of individual staying in that space.  Algorithms can then identify unusual patterns, for example:

  • Too many trips to the restroom or increasing time in restrooms
  • Increased sleep durations
  • Unusual long periods of absence that could be an indication of a fall

The BriteHome solution has the right sensing technology combined with AI models to deliver such intelligent applications for senior care, without invading their privacy or require wearables.
